Madras University named Center for Defense Technology after CDS Bipin Rawat

Chennai: Madras University is considering renaming the Center for Defense Technology and Strategic Studies in the university after the former CDS Bipin Rawat, who died along with 13 other passengers, was traveling in the helicopter that crashed near Coonoor on December 8.

The late CDS Bipin Rawat, who was an alumnus of the university, did his MPhil in 2010, where he presented a thesis on ‘Media as a Force Multiplier for the Armed Forces’.

During the condolence meeting, Madras University Vice Chancellor S Gauri said that the death of CDS Rawat is a loss not only to the country but also to the university as he was an alumnus of Madras University.

Not only the CDS but Brigadier LS Lidar who was killed in the accident was also an alumnus of the University of Madras, where he completed his MPhil on the subject China’s space capabilities and its impact in India. He completed his course in the year 2020.

Group Captain Varun Singh, who passed away this week after a long battle, also studied MSc Defense and Strategic Studies at the university.

The University of Madras started the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies in 1997 with former Air Vice Marshal FVA Scudder as a consultant. The university is currently offering three courses including MA Defense and Strategic Studies, MPhil Defense and Strategic Studies and Ph.

The department focuses on providing students with knowledge on national security, South Asian security issues, arms control, nuclear proliferation issues, conflict resolution, international terrorism, economic management, maritime security and environmental security.
