AIADMK leader and former minister D Jayakumar was on Thursday granted conditional bail by the Madras High Court in the first case registered for allegedly attacking and parading a DMK worker shirtless at a polling booth here on February 19 during an urban local body rally. Justice AD ​​Jagadish Chandra, who granted the relief, said that the petitioner (Jayakumar) will stay in Tiruchirappalli for two weeks and report to the Cantonment Police on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Earlier, the prosecution had told the judge that Jayakumar could be granted bail with strict conditions. The lawyer told the judge that the state had no objection to the relief. The counsel said that an affidavit may also be taken to the effect that he will not indulge in any such activity in future.

After appreciating the state’s move and recording the statement, the judge granted relief to Jayakumar. Earlier, representing the former minister, senior advocates Sanjay R Hegde and A Natarajan argued that Jayakumar had forced DMK cadre Naresh Kumar to take off his shirt only because he was a staunch criminal and had several criminal cases. was facing. They claimed that there was every possibility of him carrying a knife hidden in his shirt. Jayakumar actually prevented Naresh from being beaten up by others. On the other hand, the police arrested him (Jayakumar) on false charges, the senior lawyer said.

The duo also told the judge that an FIR was registered against Jayakumar only for bailable offences. But, Sec. Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC was included at a later stage. Natarajan and Hegde said this was done only to get relief from the lower courts and prevent them from seeking political vendetta. Earlier, he was granted bail for defying a provision of the Chennai City Police Act.
