LS Bypolls: TMC’s Shatrughan Sinha, Babul Supriyo File Nomination as Candidates from Bengal’s Asansol, Ballygunge

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo filed their nominations on Monday for the bypolls to the Asansol and Ballygunge Lok Sabha seats.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on March 12 announced actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha bypoll and former Union minister Babul Supriyo as its candidate for the Ballygunge assembly bypoll.

Bypolls to both the seats will be held on April 12.

While Babul Supriyo quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined TMC in September last year, Shatrughan Sinha announced that he had joined TMC two days after Bengal CM and party supremo Mamata Banerjee , he said that he will contest from the Asansol assembly seat. In Asansol and Ballygunge, senior leaders were TMC leaders during their rallies along with Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo.

Shatrughan Sinha had earlier told News18 that he would work for the people of Asansol in every possible way, adding that Bengal is “close to their heart”.

The by-election to the Asansol seat, which was won by Babul Supriyo on a BJP ticket in 2019, had resigned as an MP after Supriyo joined the TMC after quitting the saffron party. Meanwhile, the Ballygunge seat fell vacant after the death of former state minister Subrata Mukherjee in November last year.

“Good morning didi. I am very happy and looking forward to 12th April. They [BJP] They are targeting me because I have changed party. If I am being targeted, then those coming from other parties like my friend Jyotiraditya Scindia should resign,” Supriyo said while filing his nomination on Monday.
