look | ‘Bringing people closer’: Another milestone for Indian Railways as India, Nepal passenger train on track

Days after setting new milestones in the financial year 2021-22, the Indian Railways on Saturday launched a rail service between the two countries by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepal counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba running from Jaynagar in Bihar to Kurtha in Janakpur. A new achievement was achieved after inaugurating. Expressing happiness, PM Modi tweeted in Nepali: “The passenger train service between Jayanagar and Kurtha will be the first broad gauge passenger train link between Nepal and India. It will play a big role in bringing our people closer.”

Modi also shared a video of the rail project. In the first phase of the project, out of the total 69.08 km long section, 34.50 km (Jayanagar to Kurtha) is being opened, while the remaining line up to Bardibas in Nepal will be made operational in some time. The enterprise has a total of 2.95 km in India while the remaining 65.75 km is in Nepal.

Minister of State for Railways Darshan Jardosh also took to the social media platform and tweeted: “Improved connectivity between India-Nepal on Indian Railways! As envisioned by the Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, the newly inaugurated train services between Jayanagar (India) – Kurtha (Nepal) will enable easy connectivity and benefit the people of both the countries.

“This will greatly facilitate the pilgrims going from India to Janakpur Dham in Nepal. After the start of this rail service, travel will be smooth and business will get a boost. Apart from this, the movement of tourists will be facilitated, and the border area will also develop rapidly,” said Birender Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Central Railway (ECR).

The development came close to the news of the Indian Railways achieving several milestones in FY 2021-22, a year that proved to be the toughest for many sectors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For the first time in this financial year, the national transporter breached the 1400 MT freight loading mark. It has loaded 1418.10 MT during 2021-22 as compared to 1233.24 MT (+184.99 MT) +5% in 2020-21.

Everything you need to know about the Jayanagar to Kurtha Rail Project

1. The total of the enterprise is 2.95km in India while the remaining 65.75km is in Nepal.

2. The operation of trains on narrow gauge between Jayanagar in India and Baijalpur in Nepal was started in 1937.

3. It was interrupted in 2001 due to floods in Nepal, but the train service from Janakpur to Jaynagar continued till March 2014.

4. After a long wait of eight years, the country will once again be connected by rail line.

5. There will be a total of eight stations and six halt stations in this section.

6. It will also have 47 road crossings and 15 major bridges. In addition, there are 127 minor bridges on the route.

7. As per the initial plan, the speed of 100 kmph will be allowed for passenger trains, while it will be limited to 65 kmph for freight.

8. For operation on the route, two sets of 1600 HP DEMU passenger rakes were supplied to Nepal by Konkan Rail Corporation Limited (KRCL). Apart from non-AC coaches, these rakes have two AC coaches each. KRCL is envisaged to run the operations and maintenance by Nepal Railways till it is able to do so on its own.

9. In July 2021, Indian Railways conducted speed trials on a section that was supported by Railway Nepal. It was declared fully fit and given for further commissioning in October 2021.

10. Trains in this section will pass through Madhubani district of Bihar and agricultural and densely populated districts of Dhanusa, Mahottari and Siraha of Nepal.

11. Custom checking points have been made on this railway line at Jayanagar in India and Inerva station of Nepal.

A look at the achievements of Indian Railways in the financial year-2021-22

  1. shipment of goods
    Indian Railways has loaded 1418.10 MT during 2021-22 as compared to 1233.24 MT (+184.99 MT) +5% in 2020-21. This is the highest ever loading for IR in a financial year and IR achieved the highest monthly loading in the respective 19 consecutive months from September 2020 to March 2022).
  2. electrification
    A record electrification of 6,366 route kilometers has been achieved in the history of Indian Railways during 2021-22. The previous highest electrification was 6,015 RKM during 2020-21. As on 31.03.2022, out of 65,141 RKM of BG network of IR (including KRCL), 52,247 BG RKM have been electrified, which is 80.20% of the total BG network.
  3. connectivity
    In new line/doubling/gauge conversion, against the target of 2400 km the target of 2904 km and 2020-21 target of 2361 km was achieved. This is an increase of 23 per cent over the previous year. This is also the highest ever commissioning (excluding DFC).
  4. Electric Loco Production
    Highest ever electric loco production and induction of 1,110 locos (965 RAILWAY PUSH + 35 BHEL + 110 Madhepura) were achieved in the FY 2021-22.
  5. scrap sale
    Highest scrap sales achieved at Rs 5316.1 crore as compared to Rs 4571.4 crore (+16.2%) in 2020-21 (Target: Rs 4100 crore)
  6. kavach
    The stations’ total panel/electronic interlocking achieved 444 and armoring started at 850 km.
