London Heathrow Airport: Luggage issues persist, 30 flights canceled

Technical problems with the luggage system at London’s Heathrow Airport resulted in the cancellation of 30 flights, affecting 5,000 passengers. According to the BBC, the airport urged airlines to remove 10% of flights from its itinerary at terminals two and three. It said reducing the number of flights would help “minimize” the impact of technical problems.

Significantly, pictures of a pile of luggage at Heathrow Airport went viral on the internet after some passengers shared it on social media. In addition, Indian Airlines flights such as Air India were also among the affected flight operations from the airport. Earlier, Air India had informed passengers in a tweet that they may get their luggage late due to problems at Heathrow airport.

“We unreservedly apologize for the disruption caused to passengers during this weekend.” British Airways, which operates from Terminals three and five at Heathrow, told the BBC it had made a “small number of cancellations” as a result of the airport’s request.

In recent weeks, airport disruptions and flight cancellations have affected thousands of passengers in the UK, raising concerns about additional travel woes during the summer, the BBC said. One of the main reasons behind the disruption was staff shortage. Gatwick Airport has said it will reduce the number of flights operating from its airport during peak summer weather due to staff shortages.
