Lok Sabha Elections: Akhilesh Indicates SP May Contest Amethi in 2024

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday indicated that his party may field a candidate in the next elections from the high-profile Amethi seat, which it used to leave for the Congress. Yadav, who reached Amethi on Sunday for the wedding of the daughter of influential party leader and former UP minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, indicated this by tweeting in Hindi.

“I am deeply saddened to see the plight of poor women in Amethi. VIPs have always been winning and losing here, yet this is the situation here, what to say about the rest of the state,” she tweeted along with two pictures from Amethi. The Amethi parliamentary seat, which was considered a Congress pocket borough, is currently represented by BJP leader Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 parliamentary elections.

On Sunday too, Yadav targeted the BJP. Without naming Union Minister Irani, he appealed to the people of the region to defeat her in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. “‘Cylinder Wali’ is the MP from here. Will definitely defeat her,” he said. Yadav said, “Earlier BJP people used to carry cylinders on their heads. Today inflation is at its peak, but they have no answer.”
