Temba Bavuma-led South Africa will look to clinch the ODI series against defending world champions England when they take on each other in the second encounter in Bloemfontein on Sunday. The hosts won the first game by a margin of 27 runs on Friday, squandering a brilliant start by Jason Roy and Dawid Malan in their chase of 299.
Roy scored 113 for England and his opening partnership of 146 off 118 balls with Malan (59) powered the visitors to a comfortable victory chasing 299. The fast bowlers turned it around to win the game in Bloemfontein.
Anrich Nortje took 4-62, Sisanda Magala took 3-46 and Kagiso Rabada took 2-46 for South Africa.
England faltered early after Malan, Ben Duckett (3) and debutant Harry Brook (0) lost six runs in three overs, with Magala taking two wickets in his first ODI in over a year.
England were still in a strong position until Nortje caught skipper Jos Buttler behind at the start of a blistering late spell, which saw his three wickets fall and England’s hopes dashed.
Buttler’s departure for 36 left England reeling at 234–6 with Sam Curran the only recognized batsman left.
Nortje blasted to remove Jofra Archer for a duck and legspinner Tabraiz Shamsi sealed the win by getting Olly Stone caught and bowled, although Shamsi juggled and almost dropped the catch. He held on and walked away to celebrate.
When Stone was dismissed for the last time, England had about six overs to spare.
South Africa take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, which has been postponed to late 2020 coronavirus The pandemic and teams have waited more than two years to finally play.
