Mumbai: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday they said Congress It must be acknowledged that the party is no longer the dominant force from ‘Kashmir to Kanyakumari’ as it once used to be, and signaled to its comrades that MaharashtraThe ruling coalition should do a reality check.
“There was a time when there was Congress from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. But now it is not so. This (reality) must be accepted. Once (within Congress) there is a mindset to accept this (fact) the closeness (with other opposition parties) will increase,” Pawar said.
“When it comes to leadership, my colleagues in the Congress are not in the mood to take a different view,” Pawar told Mumbai Tak. flag India Today Group’s digital platform.
When Pawar was told about Mamata Banerjee being the face of a united opposition for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress people say she has Rahul Gandhi. “All parties, especially allies of Congress, are not ready to take a different stand on their leadership,” Pawar quipped.
Asked whether it was due to arrogance, Pawar cited an anecdote about “zamindars (landlords) who have lost most of their land and are unable to maintain their ‘haveli’ (mansion).
“I had told a story about the zamindars of Uttar Pradesh who used to have large plots of land and big havelis. Their land shrunk due to the Land Ceiling Act. The havelis remain but there is no capacity (of the landlords) to maintain and repair them.
“Their agricultural income is also not (as much) as before. Their land has shrunk from a few thousand acres to 15 or 20 acres. When the landlord wakes up in the morning, he sees the surrounding green fields and says that all the land belongs to him. It once belonged to them, but is no longer theirs,” Pawar said.
When asked whether Congress can be compared with? Patil (Chief) of a barren village, Pawar said he would not like to make this comparison.
