Amid major ups and downs in Maharashtra politics, first-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Rahul Narvekar has been made the speaker of the state assembly, a move that experts say is “unusual”.
As per the criteria, an experienced politician who has been a part of several House proceedings and decisions gets selected for the post. Analysts say the appointment of the Colaba MLA, whom Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis called “the youngest speaker in the country’s history”, is an ideal strategy for the BJP.
In another first, Ramraje Nimbalkar, Narvekar’s father-in-law and a senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, is the chairman of the Legislative Council.
Narvekar won the 288-member state assembly with 164 votes in favor and 107 against.
On Monday, newly appointed Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis will face the crucial floor test.

Political analyst Prof Suresh Jondhale, who teaches political science at the University of Mumbai, said: “This is BJP’s political adjustment and an ad hoc system. They want a reliable person who can help them at this critical juncture. The role of the Speaker is crucial when a confidence motion is taken. It is important to have a person who can overcome the obstacles that come up,” Jondhale said.
Former Principal Secretary (Assembly Secretariat) Anant Kalse said that narvekar is right man For work.
“Having a vast legal experience as a professional lawyer, he fits the bill. The Speaker has to handle many legal issues, be it anti-defection lawwhip or decision-making question which party is the biggest, The BJP has chosen Narvekar right,” Kalse told News18.

Rahul’s brother Makrand Narvekar told News18, “Narvekar comes from a strong political lineage. His father, Suresh Narvekar, was a senior municipal councilor and his brother, Makarand, is currently a second-time corporator from Colaba. Narvekar for many years Was a spokesperson for the youth wing of Shiv Sena, but joined the NCP after being denied a ticket by the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
