Lights, Camera, Vijay: Actor Vijay’s quasi-political outfit makes surprise gains in Tamil Nadu local body polls

Tamil Nadu local body elections held in nine districts have registered a surprise win streak: Fans of popular actor Vijay are contesting under Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, who won 109 seats in various positions in local bodies.

The victory is being seen as the first election campaign of a political movement involving the actor.

Records show that fans of the actor have won in districts of northern Tamil Nadu like Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and central districts like Villupuram, Ranipet and Tirupattur and some deep south like Tenkasi and other districts. The actor is yet to comment on the win.

Earlier, Vijay had filed a case against his father, filmmaker SA Chandrasekaran, for using his photographs and other brand collateral for a movement called Vijay Makkal Ayakkam. Now, the victory of the fans belongs to the organization called Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, which has the approval and support of the actor himself, as per sources among fans.

Vijay’s political journey has been largely tactile: he met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in August 2009, but the actor clarified after the meeting that he had no serious political plans. Lately, the actor has been openly expressing support for victims of police excesses – anti-Sterlite protests and police action – and public interest controversies such as the agitation against the medical entrance exam NEET.

In the political scene in Tamil Nadu, actor Rajinikanth recently threw in the towel and bid goodbye to the arena after keeping fans and political observers in anticipation for over two decades. After actor Vijayakanth’s quick rise and fall, ridiculing the captain and garnering support among a swathe of fans, there has been little action in the cinema-to-politics route.

Political observers say that actor Vijay, who has amassed a huge fan base of loyal fans and has no vision, could be Tamil Nadu’s next entrant from the world of cinema.
