Life imprisonment to two retired Air Force officers and one working officer: CBI Special Court pronounces verdict in 1995 cook’s custodial death case

Two retired Air Force and one working officer have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the CBI Special Court in Ahmedabad. The court gave its verdict in the 1995 cook murder case. Girija Rawat, a cook at the Air Force Center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, was tortured in November 1995 for stealing liquor from the canteen, leading to his death. The court of Special Judge ND Joshi convicted the then Squadron Leader Anoop Sood of Jamnagar Air Force-I and the then Sergeant KN Anil and Sergeant Mahendra Singh Sehrawat.

Seven accused, three acquitted, one dead
Seven people were made accused in this case, out of which three were acquitted by the court, while one of the accused died during the trial. Sood, retired as a Group Captain from the Air Force, describes himself as the Orientation Program Speaker and a trained commando from the NSG in his social media profiles. Anil has also retired from the Air Force. Sehrawat is still serving in the Air Force.

High Court conducted CBI inquiry
On the petition of Rawat’s wife, the Gujarat High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the matter. The CBI took over the investigation of the case on 22 February 2012. CBI spokesperson RC Joshi said- “It was alleged that on November 13, 1995, 10-12 Air Force Police officers, including Squadron Leader Anoop Sood, searched Rawat’s residence and tried to confess to theft of liquor from the Air Force canteen. Compelled to. Rawat’s wife had gone to the guard room to get her husband released in the evening of the same day.

Joshi told- “The wife was told that soon her husband would be released. The accused allegedly tortured her, leading to Rawat’s death. On November 14, 1995, the wife was informed about Rawat’s death and asked to take away the body.

Charge sheet filed in 2013
He said that the CBI after a thorough investigation of the case filed a charge sheet against the accused under the criminal conspiracy and murder case on July 30, 2013. Joshi told- “Recently the lower court convicted the accused and sentenced them.”
