Life imprisonment for Indian-origin man who stabbed wife to death in UK

A UK court has sentenced an Indian-origin man to life in prison after a unanimous jury convicted him of murder in the stabbing murder of his wife in south-east England’s Milton Keynes area. Anil Gill, 47, was arrested by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of killing 43-year-old Ranjit Gill in January this year after the suspect called the couple to their home.

Authorities found Ranjith lying wrapped in a duvet and bin bag in the garage of the property and had sustained severe injuries and it was soon clear that she had been dead for some time. The postmortem investigation revealed that Ranjit died due to stabbing. In February, Anil was charged with a count of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at Luton Crown Court on Friday. He must have been behind bars for at least 22 years before being eligible for parole.

The only punishment for the murder is life imprisonment, said Detective Inspector Nicola Douglas of the Major Crime Unit of the Thames Valley Police, the senior investigating officer in the case, who described the murder as brutal and cold-blooded. “I am satisfied that the minimum period of 22 years reflects the gravity of this horrific crime. I would again like to pay tribute and thank Ranjit’s family who have shown such respect in the most dire circumstances,” she said.

According to Thames Valley Police, throughout the trial, Anil claimed that he was not guilty of murder, but admitted to murder, admitting that he had illegally killed Ranjit. Anil denied that he intended to cause her grievous harm and also put forward a partial defense of the loss of control as he had said that Ranjit told and did to him.

The court heard that Anil stabbed his wife at least 18 times. They then spent several hours cleaning up the scene, wrapping Ranjit’s body in bin bags and taking it to the garage, before taking a bath and going to bed. Later the day comes when he calls the police to explain what he had done, making excuses and blaming his dead wife for his actions.

Detective Inspector Douglas said it was never accepted by the prosecution or Ranjit’s family and not accepted by the jury. She continued: “It is clear that Anil Gill knew exactly what he was doing when he repeatedly stabbed Ranjit to death. He was a controlling husband who physically and mentally abused Ranjit during their marriage. No one should be a victim of domestic abuse and we encourage anyone to report it.”

Ranjeet’s brother, Raj Sagu talks about the void left in the family’s life since his sister’s death. “A void that will never heal. Imagine, anyone who reads or hears this, imagine for a moment that the person you loved was killed in such a violent and brutal way, to yourself. Ask if you can put it into words like I’ve been asked to do. I can’t tell you how I feel, it’s impossible to put into words how I feel sitting in this trial and listening to the horrors feels.” Ranjit’s sisters Kamel Aujla, Tejinder McCann, Harminder Sahni and niece Monica Aujla also paid tribute to a beautiful, wonderful person.

“My baby girl was taken away from me by a man who cared for and loved her in sickness and in health. I would never hug her, dance with her or go out with her again,” McCann said in her police statement. I won’t be able to go.”

“I’m still in shock. I can’t understand why this guy I used to spend a lot of time with and was really close to, now I can’t even bring eye to eye with him, he’s such an amazing person How can he do that,” said Monica, Ranjeet’s niece.
