LG Dolby Vision HDR at 4K 120fps will arrive in 2021 OLEDs, reaching more TVs soon

LG is rolling out a software update that makes some of its existing TVs (albeit only launched in 2021) among the handful that can support the full capabilities of the new generation of gaming consoles. Firmware update brings with it Dolby Vision HDR support, and is being made available LG C1 and LG G1 OLED TV. This ensures that LG 2021 OLEDs will now also support Dolby Vision HDR, with too few TVs already on the market to support native 120fps frame rates at 4K resolution. The latter is a certification seen in very few display panels on the commercially available market, especially for TVs that support 4K visuals at 120fps.

The Dolby Vision HDR certification will ensure that the LG 2021 OLEDs support great overall color depth, sharp accuracy, crisp details and a wide dynamic range of colors. This means the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, two new-generation gaming consoles, will be able to run at their full peak graphics capabilities when plugged into LG 2021 OLEDs. The update is being rolled out as part of a new firmware update that users will see in their TVs as LG webOS update 03.15.27.27. Once downloaded, the update will be applied when the peak display resolution is set to 4K 120fps.

Thankfully, LG isn’t limiting the Dolby Vision HDR feature to just two super premium flagship TVs. The company says that the update will be rolled out to a wider number of TVs, including the OLED Z1 series, Nanocell Nano 99 series and QNED99 mini LED series, with the latter being the first three to receive the update. Next, LG will introduce updates for older 2020 and 2021 TVs as well, and will ensure that Dolby Vision HDR will work at both 60Hz and 120Hz frame rates. With this update out there, all you need to do is find an available unit of Xbox Series X or PS5, and wait until the games that support this feature launch.
