when it came as a surprise India Captain Rohit Sharma revealed during a media interaction that he will open with Shubman Gill and not Ishan Kishan in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. Rohit admitted that dropping Ishaan was a difficult decision, especially after he scored a double century in the last ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram.
He argued that Shubman also deserves a fair amount of chances as the youngster has not done much wrong.
Ishaan created history when he scored 210 off 131 balls against Bangladesh, becoming the youngest and fastest player to score a double century in ODIs.
However, this knock did not guarantee him a place in the first match of the three-match series against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday. Gill was given priority and scored 70 off 60 balls, which included 11 fours.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the aggressive keeper-batsman will have to wait for his ‘time’ as Gill has done no wrong.

Several former cricketers including Venkatesh Prasad criticized Team India’s decision to drop Kishan in the Guwahati ODI, but Ganguly chose to remain silent.
“I don’t know… It’s difficult for me to say. In India, we have too many opinions, let (head coach) Rahul Dravid and (captain) Rohit Sharma decide. People who really play the game should really I must decide who is the best.

In the Guwahati encounter, Kohli hit his 45th ODI century and is now four shy of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 centuries in the format.
When asked about comparing Tendulkar to Kohli, Ganguly said, “It is a difficult question to answer. Kohli is a great player. He has played many such innings, 45 hundreds are not like that. He is a special talent. There will be times when he doesn’t score, but he is a special player.”
