Lenovo to dominate global PC market in Q4 2021 despite decline: Gartner

New Delhi: Lenovo’s worldwide PC shipments declined by nearly 12 per cent in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021, the first period of year-on-year decline since the first quarter of 2020. Nevertheless, Lenovo remained the top seller in the global PC market, according to a report by Gartner, with a market share of 24.6 percent. The decline was due to a downturn in the US market, weak Chromebook demand and supply chain issues, which hampered Lenovo’s ability to supply PCs to enterprise customers.

These factors contributed to 4 per cent of HP’s year-over-year decline. However, HP’s decline was offset by strong growth in the Asia-Pacific market. HP was second with 21.1 percent share, followed by Dell in Q4 with 19.5 percent global market share. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 88.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2021, down 5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2020.

This is the first year-on-year decline after six consecutive quarters of growth. For the year, PC shipments reached 339.8 million units in 2021, an increase of 9.9 percent from 2020, the report said.

“The slowdown this quarter was due to a sharp decline in the US PC market, supply chain issues and declining demand for Chromebooks,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner. “This likely signals the end of the massive and unpredictable growth in PC demand resulting from the pandemic.

The top three vendors in the worldwide PC market remained unchanged in the fourth quarter of 2021. Dell gained market share in the period after a fifth consecutive quarter of growth. Shipment volumes exceeded 17 million units for the first time in the company’s history, driven by strong performance in Latin America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. “The pandemic changed business and consumer PC user behavior significantly, as people adapted to new ways of working and living,” Kitagawa said.
