Legendary India Skipper Kapil Dev Says ‘In Future, India Will Have Three Teams For Three Formats’

1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has said that in the team of the future India There will be three different squads for three different formats. Speaking to Gulf Times, he clarified that having multiple teams means a better pool of players.

Post Covid, the BCCI had to form two separate teams – one in Tests and the other in white ball. This experiment was first seen when India toured England for the WTC in June 2021, even as a different team led by Shikhar Dhawan took the field in Sri Lanka a month later. Later in August, the Kohli-led side took on England in five Tests.

“The flip side of changing teams often is giving a lot of cricketers a chance to play. In the future, I can see India having three teams, one each for Twenty20, ODIs and Tests. That way you can have an even bigger pool.”

“Having said that, they should have a set of teams for the time being. You can replace a weird person, I can understand that. But if you get the man of the match out the next day and someone else comes in If it is, we do not understand it as a cricketer.

Dev, who won India the World Cup in 1983, said key players should be fit for the 2023 edition.

He said, ‘Yes, we have a team, but there are other teams as well, which have the potential to win the World Cup. To win the trophy you need luck, the right combination and most importantly the fitness of the key players.

“When they play so much cricket, injuries are going to happen and I hope they don’t get injured when they get a chance to play the tournament.”

India would be looking to win the World Cup at home which is the first such tournament in India since 2011. Last time India won the trophy. After this India’s ICC trophy drought started as M S Dhoni Under his leadership, India won the 2013 Champions Trophy defeating England in the final.
