‘Legal profession about service to society, not profit maximization’, says CJI Ramana

New Delhi: Sharing his views on the legal profession, Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Tuesday said that the legal profession is not about profit maximization but about serving the society. Speaking at a function to mark the Legal Services Day, the CJI recalled the history of the legal aid movement in the country, saying that many legal luminaries provided their free legal services to the freedom fighters and fought against the might of the colonial power. fought.

He stressed that the importance of legal service authorities in India is to achieve the “constitutional goal of access to justice for all”. The CJI said the continued upward trend of reaching an amicable settlement through an alternative dispute resolution mechanism would proportionately reduce the burden on the courts.

He also launched the iOS version of Legal Services Application and also informed that the online portal of NALSA has opened its services in more languages.

The CJI also expressed happiness by showing enthusiasm to the young law students to participate in the Moot Court competitions organized by the Legal Services Authorities.

Enlightening the younger generation on the legal profession, the CJI said, “Your decision to join the legal aid movement will pave the way for a great career. This will help you inculcate a sense of empathy, understanding and selflessness. Remember, Unlike other professions, the legal profession is not about maximizing profits, but about serving the society,” the CJI said.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was present at the function, expressed concern over the derogatory remarks being made on social media against the judges. Rijiju appreciated the role played by the National, State and District Legal Services Authorities in providing legal aid.

The CJI further said: “I am hopeful that under his leadership, the existing hurdles in the development of legal services officers will be removed with immediate intervention. I am glad that he fully understands the hard work put in by the judges. “

He mentioned that it is your duty to be alert to the social realities around you and to be mindful of your role in responding to it. “I find it extremely beneficial for law students that they are exposed to the ground realities of our country through the legal services authorities,” he said.
