Lebanon responsible for attacks, Hezbollah or not: Israel PM

Israel’s prime minister said on Sunday he held the Lebanese government responsible for firing rockets from its territory, whether or not the Hezbollah terrorist group launched weapons.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s remarks came days after the heaviest flare-up in violence between Israel and Hezbollah in several years and indicated that Israel may expand its response if the rocket fire continues.

Bennett told his cabinet that the country of Lebanon and the Lebanese military would have to take responsibility (for) what happens in its backyard.

Over several days last week, militants in Lebanon launched a barrage of rockets into Israel, triggering rare Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. On Friday, Hezbollah fired additional rockets toward Israel, and Israel responded with heavy artillery fire.

Bennett said it is less important to us that if it is a Palestinian organization that has shot independent rebels, the state of Israel will not accept shooting on its own soil.

He spoke a day after terrorist Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said he would retaliate against any future Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon and said it would be wrong to believe that Hezbollah is involved in the internal divisions in Lebanon or the country. Will be constrained by severe economic crisis. .

Nasrallah said don’t miscalculate by saying that Hezbollah is busy with Lebanon’s problems, adding that the firing of the rockets was a clear message.

Israel and Hezbollah are enemies who fought to a standoff in a months-long war in 2006.

Lebanon is facing its worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history, described by the World Bank as the worst in the world since the mid-1800s.

Israel estimates that Hezbollah has more than 130,000 rockets and missiles capable of attacking anywhere in the country. In recent years, Israel has also expressed concerns that the group is trying to import or develop an arsenal of precision-guided missiles.
