Leader of Opposition in Assam alleges he is under pressure to join saffron party

The time has come to prepare for the second round of by-elections in Assam. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that more opposition MLAs would join the BJP and that bypolls would be held during the municipal elections in Assam in February. Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly claimed that he was under pressure from the ruling BJP.

Speaking to News18, Leader of Opposition Devvrat Saikia said, “I am under pressure. It is true that I am under pressure. But I have to face challenges. I cannot join BJP due to ideological issues. If it takes the ideology of Congress then I will join BJP.”

“BJP is doing politics of inducement in Assam and trying to hijack our MLAs. BJP uses ‘fear-thinking’ and blackmailing policies towards opposition MLAs. But I think none of our MLAs will leave the party, which has a strong Congress ideology.”

Political secretary to the chief minister, Jayant Malla Barua said, “It is not necessary to use inducement or blackmailing policies to bring MLAs along with you. They want to join BJP. More and more opposition MLAs are in touch with us.”

Yesterday, the Assam BJP president said, “East Assam is already saffron. Many opposition MLAs have already joined us. We don’t need to intimidate or harass any opposition leader to join us.”

Another BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi told News18, “There will be no protests in Assam till 2026. All MLAs can join BJP, or BJP will capture all seats of opposition. Now three Congress MLAs are in direct contact with me. They want to join our party as soon as possible. I don’t want to reveal their names.”

The BJP had won 60 seats in the elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly held in April. The BJP’s tally has gone up to 62 after the victory in the October 30 by-elections. The seat of Majuli constituency fell vacant recently and the bypoll for this seat is yet to be announced. Former Assam CM and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from Majuli constituency, after being elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In the by-elections, our ministers, MLAs, party workers and allies have worked very hard. This has created enthusiasm among the people in many constituencies. People from two-three constituencies want by-polls. However, I cannot say when it will be held. ”
