Varanasi: At last Monday Thousands of devotees and pilgrims from different parts of the country performed Jalabhishek in the holy month of Shravan at Kashi Vishwanath Temple and other major temples of Lord Shiva.
Last Monday, Shiv Sena workers were arrested while trying to take out a procession to perform Jalabhishek at Shringar Gauri.
On the first, second and third Mondays of the current Shravan month, 47,000 to 65,000 devotees had reached the KVT for Jalabhishek. However, on the last Monday of the auspicious month, the size of the queues in the barricading areas towards Madagin and Godoulia from Chhattdwar entry point to Dashashwamedh became longer from late Sunday night, which did not subside till late afternoon. According to the KVT administration, till Monday night, about 1.25 lakhs had reached the temple.
Though the Covid-19 protocol was in effect, it was violated at many places like Dashashwamedh Ghat, where people thronged to collect water to take a dip in the river Ganga and perform Jalabhishek. Men in khakis can be found working hard to ensure social distancing by devotees queuing up to enter the KVT. Kanwar Yatra was banned in this Shravan month, but saffron-clad devotees were raising slogans in large numbers.
Continuing their tradition of performing Jalabhishek at Shringar Gauri in Gyanvapi complex, Shiv Sena workers led by Ajay Choubey tried to take out a procession. But, a heavy police force under the leadership of ACP Dashashwamedh Awadhesh Pandey foiled their attempt at the church square and sent them back to their places.
Other major temples of Lord Shiva including Markandeya Mahadev, Gauri Kedareshwar, Tilbhandeshwar, Jageshwar, Mrityunjay Mahadev, Kardameshwar and Rameshwar Mahadev temples in Kaithi also witnessed huge crowds of devotees.
