Last minute Christmas shopping swells as Sangam City gears up for the festivities. Allahabad News – Times of India

Prayagraj: The city of Sangam is decorated with high parapets of various churches and dazzling lights hanging from the pillars. Christmas Celebration is on 25th December. By late night, the city markets are busy doing business at a fast pace. Churches are beautifully decorated with multicolored lights, citizens are busy doing their ‘last minute’ shopping for Christmas tree toppings and other decorative items at various stalls set up at various busy squares in the city.
Be it the footpath of Civil Lines or the main market of Katra, Chowk and many areas, many shops have opened this week offering various items needed to decorate the Christmas tree.
But on Christmas Eve believers await the quiet and solemn midnight services organized by the various churches of the city. A visit to the local square and Civil Lines market revealed that decorative items, along with designer cakes, are becoming a major attraction for visitors to the established shops on Christmas Eve. From bells of different sizes to decorative laces, snowflakes, toffees, decorative glitter balls, stars of different sizes are on sale for the festival enthusiasts.
Along with these, Santa dresses and hats are also an instant hit in the market. Interestingly, when it comes to celebrating the festival, no religion division is seen anywhere. Thousands of young people from non-Christian families are buying items to decorate their Christmas trees and celebrate the festival. At the same time, there are many Muslims among those who sell these goods.
Toys and greeting cards are also among the most sought after items among people of different ages who visit the markets for Christmas shopping. Both branded and non-branded greeting cards and gift items were selling like hot cakes.
After a not so profitable celebration in 2021, this year the city’s bakery has also been flooded with orders for at least 150 odd calls for special cakes. More interestingly, citizens are decorating their homes and shops with the help of specialized designers and even bringing in decorative materials.
Preparations for Saturday’s festivities had begun in mid-December and people were planning and looking forward to shopping. People think that Christmas shopping and gift buying are the same thing, however, there is much more to Christmas shopping than just gifts.
All the churches in the city are decorated with colorful lights hanging from the high parapet. “Gone are the days when this festival was confined to the Christian community only because now people from all communities do not want to miss the opportunity to participate in the celebration. Smita Dixit, a resident of Talirganj said, “I have planned this at my home as a perfect end to year celebrations and a chance to give beautiful gifts to my family.
