‘Langer will not shy away from speaking the harsh truth, often in confrontational language’

Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels the only consolation for England right now is that their Ashes rivals Australia are in turmoil – both on and off the field.

“If there is one consolation for England at the moment, it is that their opponents Australia are also in turmoil this winter. The results have been poor across multiple formats, culminating in an embarrassing T20 series loss to Bangladesh, and what appears to be an open rebellion against head coach Justin Langer,” Vaughan wrote on Facebook late Saturday.

Langer, 50, has come under considerable scrutiny after it was alleged that he had a heated argument with a Cricket Australia (CA) employee over a video of Bangladesh’s victory after the hosts won the T20I series 4-1. Was.

The investigation into the coach’s management style and grumpy attitude became so intense that CA issued a statement supporting Langer who is currently preparing to lead Australia’s charge in the T20 World Cup after the Ashes in 2021. Is.

Vaughan has offered his support to Langer, saying that the breach of trust between the players and the coach ends in predictable ways.

“Langer is an abrasive presence, someone who won’t shy away from delivering harsh truths and often quite confrontational language. He was wired this way as a player and when he smoothed out some of those edges as a coach it will never change completely. – and we all know how it usually ends,” Vaughan wrote.

“I suspect that some Australian players, accustomed to playing in franchise leagues around the world, where the atmosphere is much more relaxed and the consequences of failure not so extreme, just find Langer a bit too much,” he added.

The 46-year-old noticed that England coach Chris Silverwood does not have a divided dressing room, unlike Langer. But Vaughan feels that England has little time to make changes in the ongoing Test series against India.

“Silverwood doesn’t have a dissatisfied dressing room on his hands and has time to replace it, but the bottom line is he needs a serious edge when it comes to performances at Headingley next week,” Vaughan wrote.

“If England go down 2-0, it’s hard to envisage them recovering anything from the series, so the batsmen need to show more technicality and some serious courage at Leeds. However, my fear is that only a smidge of personal genius – perhaps from the Root – will push them out of this hole,” Vaughan concluded.

The third Test between England and India begins in Leeds on 25 August.

India lead 1-0 in the five-match series.
