“After spending two years with the team, I will take some memorable moments with me,” he said in a statement on Monday.

“As I move away from the Afghanistan cricket team and its cricket structure, I look forward to the next phase of my coaching career and the opportunities it brings.”

Klusener took over as Afghanistan coach from Andy Moles, who was serving in an interim capacity following the ouster of Phil Simmons after the 2019 World Cup.

Klusener’s contract was then extended until the end of 2021.

Although Afghanistan hardly played any cricket in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team did quite well under Klusener, winning three out of one Test, three of six ODIs and nine of 14.

During his first series as head coach, Afghanistan defeated West Indies 2–1 in the T20I series played in India. They beat Ireland 3-0 in ODIs and 2-1 in T20I series earlier this year.
