Lance Klusener returns as Zimbabwe’s batting coach

Months after leaving his job as Afghanistan’s head coach, former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener has rejoined the Zimbabwe senior men’s national team as their batting coach.

The appointment of the 50-year-old Klusener was confirmed by the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) board during their meeting on Monday evening.

Klusener will replace former Zimbabwean cricketer Stuart Matsikneri, who will now take over as assistant coach, while India’s Lalchand Rajput will remain in charge as the national team’s head coach.

Klusener previously served as Zimbabwe’s batting coach between 2016 and 2018.

Klusener quit his job as Afghanistan’s head coach in November last year, announcing that he would not seek an extension beyond 2021.

“After spending two years with the team, I will take some memorable moments with me. As I move away from the Afghanistan cricket team and its cricket structure, I look forward to the next phase of my coaching career and the opportunities it brings,” Klusener said at the time of leaving the Afghanistan job.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is also in the process of finalizing the appointment of a bowling coach and a fitness trainer for the men’s national team.

Meanwhile, Craig Ervine has been confirmed as the captain of Zimbabwe for ODIs and T20Is. “He has been assigned full-time responsibility after leading the national team to limited overs tours of Ireland, Scotland and Sri Lanka as interim captain,” ZC said in a statement.

Sean Williams has been retained as Zimbabwe’s Test captain.

Zimbabwe Men’s Team Technical Staff: Lalchand Rajput (Head Coach), Stuart Matsikneri (Assistant Coach), Lance Klusener (Batting Coach), Shepherd Makunura (Fielding Coach), Mufaro Chithurumani (Analyst), Trevor Wambe (Physiotherapist).
