Like any other medical treatment, post-operative care is of utmost importance when it comes to kidney transplant as there exists a possibility for the body to reject the new kidney.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President Lalu Prasad Yadav underwent a successful kidney transplant at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. His daughter Rohini Acharya stepped in to become a kidney donor for her father. As per updates from the family, the surgery was successful and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav also put out a tweet expressing his gratitude to Rohini Acharya. The incident has shed light on the well-being of kidney donors and recipients after surgery.

Dr Salil Jain, Director and HOD, Nephrology and Renal Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram told Hindustan Times, “Chronic kidney disease has become an epidemic and we are seeing a large number of patients who require dialysis . The best treatment option for such patients is kidney transplant.

Patients (both donor and recipient) and family members should be careful and keep in mind the dos and don’ts after a transplant.

The kidney transplant recipient should take the prescribed medication on time, and should not stop it without the knowledge and advice of the doctors.

  • After transplant, patients should avoid taking antibiotics and pain relievers, unless specifically instructed to do so by their doctors.
  • Regular hydration and monitoring of blood pressure should be given priority. If the patient has cold, fever, joint pain, rashes or nausea, he should be taken to the hospital.
  • A kidney transplant patient must maintain a high standard of personal hygiene, monitor his nutrition and avoid eating outside food.
  • Another important consideration is to avoid moving or lifting heavy objects for the first one to two months after surgery to avoid putting pressure on the stitches.
  • Donors, on the other hand, should get their blood pressure and urine creatinine levels tested every six months after surgery.
