Lalremsiami is disappointed with India’s World Cup performance and believes the team will do better in the Commonwealth Games

Youth India Women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami is disappointed with the team’s performance in the FIH women’s section World Cup Spain and Netherlands 2022, but added that the girls would work on the mistakes and try to make a strong comeback at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

India, led by goalkeeper Savita, finished ninth in the World Cup, registered two draws against England (1-1) and China (1-1) respectively and lost 3-4 to New Zealand in the pool stage. They suffered a 0–1 loss to Spain in a ‘crossover game’, thus missing out on qualifying for the quarter-final stage of the competition. However, the team defeated Canada 1–1 (3–2 shootout) and Japan 3–1 to finish ninth in the tournament.


As India begin their campaign at the Birmingham Games from July 29, Lalremsiami said the “positive learnings” from the World Cup campaign will keep the team in good shape. We are disappointed with the result (in the World Cup). I think we could have done better, but in the end, you need to accept the positive learning from the campaign, move on and focus on that. We will work on the mistakes and start afresh for the Commonwealth Games. He scored a goal against New Zealand in the pool stage match.

“Personally, I could have created more goalscoring opportunities; I could have turned more goals. It didn’t go as planned, but there were many lessons involved. I feel proud to have the opportunity to represent India in the World Cup, and I am really lucky to have a lot of supportive teammates. Like I said, we are just taking the positives out of the campaign, learning from our mistakes and improving our game.”

With less than two weeks to go for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Lalremsiami said, “We have introspected on our performance in the tournament and are now focusing on working on all aspects of the game before moving on to the big event. are.

“We have been in Europe for over a month and there is still a long way to go. It is a long tour and it is really important that we stay in the moment and take one step at a time,” concluded Lalremsiami. India will begin their CWG 2022 campaign against Ghana on 29 July.
