Lalit Modi’s Radical New Idea To Promote Women’s Sports In India, Suggests This ‘Mandatory’ Rule

Lalit Modi Built This Sporting Behemoth Now Called IPL Long ago in 2008. Today, he is nowhere to be seen, and yet he is as influential as he was then. Even more so as the IPL grew in stature. When Modi speaks, some stakeholders listen and now he has come up with this idea which can definitely boost women’s cricket in India. Though the BCCI has been organizing a side tournament with the IPL since 2018 called the Women’s T20 Challenge, Modi feels that the BCCI will have to take a little more initiative to make the women’s game even more popular.

Talking to NDTV, she said that the franchise owners should also buy a women’s team and it should be mandatory.

“I haven’t seen a lot of IPL women’s games this year (Women’s T20 Challenge), but I think one of the biggest things they should do is make it mandatory for IPL franchises to have a women’s team.”

“If an IPL franchise owner is able to have a women’s team, you will see the bench strength in Indian women’s cricket. You will see investment in women’s cricket by owners who are already making good money now,” he said.

A total of four matches were played in the latest edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022, which was played in the middle of the IPL. A total of three teams participated, which played two matches each.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas won the tournament.

Earlier, when the Gujarat franchise was bought by CVC Capitals, Modi had been quite vocal. The former IPL commissioner had alleged that the BCCI had allowed a betting company to buy an IPL franchise.

Soon after the Indian Cricket Board’s announcement, Modi took to Twitter to take a dig at BCCI without naming the owners. “I think betting companies can buy IPL teams. There should be a new rule. Obviously, a qualified bidder also owns a big betting company. What next? Doesn’t BCCI do its homework? So what should anti-corruption do? Maybe? #cricket.”
