Lakshadweep denies entry to Left MPs from Kerala, says visit ‘against public interest’

The Lakshadweep administration has rejected the application sent by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Kerala MPs to visit Lakshadweep. In the past, United Democratic Front (UDF) lawmakers were also denied permission to visit the island.

In its letter, the administration stated that the purpose of the visit is political action and the permit has been denied as his visit to the islands for political activities would disturb the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the islands and would be against the interest of the general public and public order. and the security of the Union Territory.

The purpose of the visit, given in writing by the MPs, is to fact-check on the impact of administrative actions and reforms under the current administrator of Lakshadweep.

The administration said that as per the police report, the proposed yatra “may energize the local people, political parties/workers, social workers and people from different walks of life regarding the current protest/movement against the administration”. This could possibly be the result of external public protests in the islands, it said.

“There is every possibility of a public gathering and such gathering could lead to the spread of COVID in the islands, affecting the efforts made by the administration in the fight against the pandemic,” it said in a statement.

The administration said the applicants have failed to deposit the application fee and produce challan receipt, and have failed to produce an undertaking from the sponsor duly signed before a public notary or magistrate.

There are frequent protests in Lakshadweep against the rules by the new administrator. The Kerala Assembly has also passed a resolution in support of the people of Lakshadweep. Both the fronts want their MPs to visit the islands and talk to the people there and assess the situation. This request has been rejected for the time being.

Applicants may file an appeal under Rule 9 of the Lakshadweep Minicoy and Amindivi Islands (Restriction on Entry and Residence) Rules, 1967 within 30 days from the date of receipt of the order to the Hon’ble Administrator of UT Lakshadweep.
