Friday will not be a weekly holiday for school students in Muslim-majority Lakshadweep. The Lakshadweep Education Department has come out with a new calendar declaring Friday working days and all Sunday holidays for schools in the islands, ending the decades-old privilege of students on Fridays as holidays in the islands on religious grounds. has given.

Lakshadweep MP Mohammad Faisal said that ever since schools were opened in the islands to provide education to students six decades ago, Friday was a holiday and Saturday was a half-day working day.

He said that this decision has been taken without consulting any school body, district panchayat or local MP. “Such a decision is not in the right of the people. It is a unilateral decision of the administration,” Faisal told PTI.

He said that whenever any change is brought in the local system, it should be discussed with the people. Official sources said the administration revised school timings and regular school activities to ensure “optimal use of resources, proper engagement of learners and necessary planning of the teaching learning process”.

Lakshadweep District Panchayat’s vice-chairman cum counselor PP Abbas has written a letter to Praful Khoda Patel, advisor to the administrator, requesting him to reconsider the order of the education department to remove the feelings of students and parents.

In his letter, he said that the ethnic population of Lakshadweep is Muslim and according to their faith, Friday is a holiday and Friday prayers are considered an unavoidable religious practice.

He requested the administration to convene a meeting of elected representatives and other stakeholders to discuss the issue.
