Lakme Fashion Week: Paralympian Deepa Malik on body positivity and rising above disability

“Fashion should be for everyone, like sport is for everyone,” says Paralympian Deepa Malik. Sports is all set to win hearts with her personality at Reena Dhaka’s digital showcase at FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week.

Excited to be a part of Reena’s fashion film revolving around the collection The Unstoppables, Deepa says, “It was a wonderful experience and Reena took such great care of me. Reena is such an easy going and patient person. She is the epitome of a new liberated woman who knows how to follow her passion and never give up and that’s why I find a common foothold with her. “

fashion is for everyone

Deepa, who is paralyzed in the lower chest, feels that people have a certain perception about beauty standards and ultimately judge individuals on the basis of that. “I have encountered people who do not find the body beautiful because it is paralyzing. So, when you are criticizing me because of my body, you are definitely judging my looks and my personality as well. So, this film was an opportunity to break some stereotypes. I still feel grateful for my body because it has given me purpose to rise above my disability. I feel beautiful.”

Let’s talk inclusivity

An extraordinary woman, Deepa wants to add the words fun, fashion, fun, celebration and travel to the word wheelchair or disability. Calling it a step forward in the world of inclusivity, she believes that when designers start designing for all it will reflect how we want to see India at 75. “There should be equal opportunity for all irrespective of gender, body size, disability. Ages. Each of us has a right to feel beautiful from within. And when given the right way of acceptance, equal opportunity and respect, only then will we feel beautiful from within.”

making a fashion statement

As a woman who likes to keep it simple, Deepa believes that one’s style mantra should reflect who you are. “I believe if what you wear brings a smile to your soul then that is your style. I feel confident in anything that is comfortable. I don’t need a cliched body type to be fashionable Yes,” says Deepa.
