Actress Kubbra Sair; Filmmaker Oniro
In a recent interview, filmmaker Onir confirmed that he has roped in actress Kubra Sait to play a role in the sequel of his acclaimed film ‘I Am’ or ‘We Are’.
Filmmaker Onir is gearing up to make a sequel to his critically acclaimed 2009 film, I Am. The sequel is titled, We Are. He has now confirmed about casting actress Kubra Sait for a special segment in the film. The upcoming film will bring together four different stories set in different cities.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Onir while talking about the casting of Kubbra hinted that he has to play a special character in the film. “Kubbra will be seen opposite actor Nimisha Sajayan. I won’t go into much detail now. But for me, it is a very special character,” the portal quoted him as saying. He further mentioned Kubbra playing the role of a girl who is locked in and out without consent. The story will find out what happened next.
I Am received the National Award for Best Hindi Feature Film. Starring Juhi Chawla, Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Sanjay Suri and Radhika Apte, the film weaves together four stories, with common themes of fear driving the narrative. Speaking about the upcoming sequel, Onir said that he is not planning to lose the essence of the original idea. The film will tell different facets of gay life and influence more shades of LGBTQ community. The 52-year-old revealed that the backdrop of the four segments will be set in the four cities where the first part was originally shot – Kashmir, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Onir feels the film will celebrate gay life and love “from our perspective”. “It celebrates the Supreme Court’s decision on Section 377, but it’s also a critique of what we’re facing right now. I’m not thinking about who would be comfortable with what, but I’m just going with stories. Making a film which I hope will touch everyone,” he was quoted as saying. The film will go on floors in September this year.
