Kovid vaccination for 12-14 age group postponed in MP, Delhi sees lukewarm response

new Delhi: The COVID-19 vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 in Madhya Pradesh was on Wednesday postponed by a week.

This development comes after the launch of COVID vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 across the country on Wednesday.

Vaccination for children in this age group will now start in Madhya Pradesh after March 22, when the frontline workers will get the necessary training, reported PTI.

“There are around 3 million boys and girls in the age group of 12 to 14 years. Their Covid vaccination will start after March 22,” Dr Santosh Shukla, State Director (Vaccination), National Health Mission, told PTI.

Stating that children in this age group would be vaccinated only in schools, Dr Shukla said that those born in 2008, 2009 and up to March 15, 2010 would be eligible to receive the jab.

On the other hand, the national capital witnessed a lukewarm response on the first day of the vaccination drive.

Vaccination officer Himanshu Kaushal said there is a “lack of awareness”.

“We have asked schools to inform parents about it. Also, the COWIN system is not updated,” Kumar said.

“Even if a few children come, we cannot give the COVID-19 vaccine because at least 15 children are needed to open a vial,” he said.

According to officials, around six to seven lakh children in the age group of 12 to 14 years are eligible for vaccination.

As per the guidelines issued by the Central Government, children in the age group of 12-14 years will be vaccinated through dedicated inoculation sessions to avoid their unintended immunization with any other COVID-19 vaccines.

The campaign will start with the organic E’s Corbevax vaccine at an interval of 28 days.

As of March 1, 2021, there were 47 million children in the age group of 12 and 13 in the country.

In addition, all people aged 60 years and above have been made eligible for a precautionary dose of the COVID vaccine.

Dosage prioritization and sequencing will be based on completion from nine months to 39 weeks from the date of administration of the second dose.
