The Deputy Commissioner said that as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Kovid-19, an order has been issued to ban the sale of liquor in the border areas of the district. Accordingly, 24 Indian Liquor (IML) shops and five toddy shops operating in the border areas of Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur and Sulliya taluks of Dakshina Kannada district have been ordered to be closed with immediate effect till August 15. These banned shops include bars, liquor shops and toddy shops in Dakshina Kannada located within 5 km from the Kerala border.
“Covid-19 cases in Dakshina Kannada district are increasing despite taking all necessary measures. As per the order of the government, special surveillance is being done to keep a watch on the movement of people from Kerala, which has seen a sharp rise in the Covid-19 cases. Cases are likely to rise in Dakshina Kannada, as a large number of tipplers from Kasaragod district depend on liquor shops operating in the border areas,” the DC said.
DC has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Excise Department in Dakshina Kannada district to implement the order by closing the liquor shops. The order has been issued in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005. Karnataka Excise Act 1965, he said.
