Tope said that he had requested the Center to reduce the gap between the two doses of Kovishield, but the central government officials rejected it. Another official said that the change in time interval will be done only on the basis of scientific evidence and not on the demands of the people.

Apart from Maharashtra, some other states had also approached the Center to bridge the gap. The current gap between the two doses of Covishield is 84 days.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government last week issued guidelines allowing cinema halls, drama theaters and auditoriums to reopen from October 22. However it did give the option of showing “safe status” on the Aarogya Setu or vaccination certificate as a permit to enter the facility. .

The Indian Express noted that double vaccination had been made mandatory for the staff, scavengers and people employed in the food court as well as artists and actors within the premises of these halls.

The standard operating procedure (SOP) issued by the state said, “The Aarogya Setu app showing safe status will be mandatory for all visitors or as an option, visitors can show the final Covid vaccination certificate.”

The SOP further said that since the entry to the mall is restricted to only fully vaccinated citizens and children below the age of 18 years, cinema-goers can produce a ticket to enter the mall where the multiplexes are located.

As per reports, till October 15, the state had administered 9.07 crore doses. Of these, a total of 6.29 crore (70%) were given to the beneficiaries of the first dose. 2.78 crore (30%) people in Maharashtra have been fully vaccinated.
