Kota Suicide Case: NEET aspirant blamed breakup, pressure of studies in suicide note

According to the police, Aniket Kumar, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging from the fan in his hostel room in Indira Vihar area under Jawahar Nagar police station area on Friday. Kumar had passed class 12 and was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Under Graduate (NEET-UG) for the past three years.

A suicide note has been recovered from his hostel room in which Kumar has written that he was under stress due to breakup from studies. Kumar wrote in his note that he was upset because a girl had played with his feelings, which added to the already mounting mental pressure of his studies, adding that he was unable to cope with both . He also expressed his love for each and every member of his family including his parents, two sisters and brother.

Police said that the body of the deceased student has been handed over to the relatives after the postmortem. A case of unnatural death has been registered under section 174 of CrPC. This incident was the 15th case of suicide by a student this year. The suicide of three students earlier this month has reignited the debate on the pressure of studies when young people flock to coaching hub Kota to prepare for competitive exams.

On 11 December, the coaching city of Kota was rocked by 3 students committing suicide within 12 hours, prompting the district and coaching authorities to take measures to investigate it. Two of the 3 killed students have been identified as Ankush Anand (16), a NEET candidate from Bihar’s Supaul district and Ujjwal Kumar (18), a JEE candidate from Bihar’s Gaya district. While another, Pranav Verma (17), a NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district, died on the same day allegedly after consuming some poisonous substance in his hostel room in Landmark town under the city’s Kunhari police station.
