The order was passed following an application filed by advocate Ashish Satpute, representing the commission. Earlier in 2018, the commission had issued notices to all the prominent political leaders of the state asking them to appear before them and submit their suggestions and other information related to Koregaon Bhima violence and prevention of such incidents in future. but only Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had replied and filed his affidavit before the commission. Pawar was also produced before the commission on May 5, when he was cross-examined by lawyers representing various witnesses.
Recently, advocate Satpute had filed an application demanding an order from the commission to summon leaders of other major political parties of the state. Satpute pointed out that as per the “Terms of Reference (TOR)” of the commission, it is to suggest short-term and long-term measures to be taken by the district administration and police to avoid recurrence of such incidents. ,
Satpute said that knowing the views of prominent political leaders on the issues of this ToR would help the commission to submit its report. Satpute said it is necessary to know from these political leaders what additional powers can be given to police officers which will help them to prevent and control law and order situation like communal riots, political agitation and bandh in a better and effective manner. The Commission accepted Satpute’s application and passed an order stating: “Invite the President (of the political parties) to personally attend the Commission by appointing a representative on their behalf.”
According to the order, the presidents of political parties or their representatives should file an affidavit before the commission by June 30. The order further said that the Commission of Inquiry shall call the person who has filed the affidavit before the panel to give oral evidence.
