KK No More: Singer was not mobbed, there was no stampede-like situation, says Kolkata Police

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel on Friday said there is no such situation where there is a shortage of space for those present at the city’s Nazrul Manch during singer KK’s performance on Wednesday. Goel said that the police, however, are initiating some measures to prevent overcrowding and to provide emergency medical assistance if needed.

“There may have been overcrowding to some extent, but there was no situation where people lacked space or were sweating or had problems with (other) people,” he said. He said that KK reached Nazrul Manch, his last venue at 6.22 pm and went to the stage at 7.05 pm. “At no time were they crowded, we had adequate police presence at the place,” he said.

He also rubbished the allegations that the ACs were not working and said that the air conditioning of the hall was working as per the information received from the officials running the hall.

He told that before the arrival of KK, there was a police system under the leadership of an assistant commissioner. Addressing the controversy over how many people were present at the venue, Goel said that despite this, the police have a “clear video” where people can be seen dancing standing comfortably. He also said that there was no stampede like situation at any point of time and there was enough space for the crowd to watch the show comfortably when viewed from different angles.

However, the exact number of attendees could not be ascertained, Goyal said.

“We request that from now onwards a medical ambulance be kept with a doctor and the hospital be identified where people can be taken in case of emergency,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Videos of the incident had also gone viral where some people could be seen using fire extinguishers to disperse the crowd. Addressing the same, Goel said that there was a small debate among some people who were trying to go on stage, and that was when extinguishers were used. However, the situation was brought under control almost immediately, informed Goyal.
