Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has once again come forward and assured East Bengal fans that the club will play in the Indian Super League, despite its management’s ugly clash with Shree Cement Limited (SCL). Banerjee, who played a key role in SCL’s tie-up with East Bengal in their last-minute bid to play in the ISL last season, took a dig at the club management for not signing the final agreement.

“Ektu chere khelo, ektu chere khelo ota ho jabe (Give some space. Then it will be fine,” Mamata said during an event at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here on the club’s participation in India’s top-tier league for the upcoming season. The executive members of the East Bengal Club refused to sign the final agreement with Shree Cement, claiming discrepancy in the initial term sheet.

The preliminary document was signed by both sides in the presence of Banerjee in September 2020, paving the way for East Bengal’s dramatic entry into the ISL. “Last time also I intervened at the last minute as there was no other way after Mohun Bagan signed with ATK. Now as per my knowledge they will also be able to play in ISL. It is about being flexible and allowing some space (to SCL),” Banerjee said.

“I want clubs from Bengal to compete in the ISL, and play an active role in the development of Indian football.” He said that “small differences” would be resolved and soon the smiles on the faces of East Bengal fans would be back and the club would play in the ISL. “Taking responsibility for five years is no joke. The investor will have to spend around Rs 50 crore. Last time we convinced him to come and invest in the club.” Banerjee’s assurance came less than a month after two groups of East Bengal supporters clashed in the ground. One group attacked the club officials. had planned protests against and sought Banerjee’s intervention. Stop the jam.
