Kharkiv virtually in Russian hold, soldiers helping to evacuate Indians at government’s request: Sources

The city of Kharkiv in Ukraine’s northeast is now virtually under Russian control, top sources in the Indian government have told CNN-News18. He said Russian forces that are raining explosives and bullets on the city are avoiding areas where Indians could be hiding after being asked by Indian representatives.

Sources said that all the Indian girl students who were trapped there are on their way to the western border of Ukraine by train and only a few male students are left.

“We are tying up with the Russian side for the safe passage of our students,” he told CNN-News18.

Sources said the Russians are cooperating and assuring safe movement of all Indians. He said that talks are going on at the highest level on this issue.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday that India has intensified measures to evacuate its citizens from war-torn Ukraine.

Officials said efforts were on to reach cities in that country’s eastern side, although it was not going to be easy, as intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops continued.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine issued a second urgent advisory earlier in the day, asking Indian nationals to leave Kharkiv immediately. “Students who cannot find vehicle or bus and are in railway station can proceed on foot…” it read.
