Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen on Thursday praised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi For his efforts in the conservation of rhinos. Pietersen, who is a noted conservationist, hailed PM Modi as a global leader and called him “a hero” for his efforts, which led to an increase in the number of rhinos in India. “Thank you, Narendra Modi. A global leader standing up for rhinoceros species! If only more leaders would do the same. And this is the reason why the number of rhinos in India is increasing rapidly! What a hero!” he wrote.

Pietersen’s remarks came after a tweet by PM Modi lauding the efforts of the BJP government in Assam to fight rhino poaching. “Commendable effort by Team Assam. The one-horned rhinoceros is the pride of India, and all steps will be taken for its betterment,” wrote PM Modi.

Assam, which is home to the largest population of one-horned rhinos in the world, has launched a conservation program to save the animal from poachers. On the occasion of World Rhino Day on 22 September, state government officials burnt 2,479 rhino horns confiscated from poachers in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “Today is a historic day for Assam and India. Sarma tweeted, “We have taken an extraordinary step of burning 2479 horn stock of One Horned Rhinoceros, a first of its kind globally.

Coming back to Peterson, his association with rhino conservation efforts dates back to 2013, when he first came across the tragic situation during a forest safari in South Africa. The cricketer then used his profile to raise awareness about rhino conservation.

Peterson was recently seen in a Nat Geo documentary that revolves around rhino conservation efforts in India. He had traveled to the Kaziranga National Park in Assam to shoot for the documentary titled ‘Save This Rhino: India’. The documentary was released on the occasion of World Rhino Day.

The number of rhinos in India had decreased to 75 in 1905, however, with the efforts of the governments and people over the years, it has now increased to over 2500.
