Kerala rain: Yellow alert issued for 8 districts

Heavy rains continue to lash parts of Kerala, affecting Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kottayam districts, resulting in extensive damage to property. According to a PTI report, three people died on Monday in rain-related incidents.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod and Kozhikode for Tuesday. Schools and all educational institutions will remain closed today in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Alappuzha districts.

According to state Agriculture Minister P Prasad, crops worth Rs 400 crore have been damaged due to rain. “We will now approach the Center for compensation and for this to happen, we request all those who have damaged their crops in the next 10 days,” Prasad said.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said that in rain-related incidents across the state, one house was completely damaged, while 28 were partially damaged, taking the lives of three people, including two children, in the last 24 hours. . Two children died in two separate incidents in Kannur and Thrissur districts on Sunday. A driver was killed in a landslide incident in Ernakulam district.

According to the weatherman, Kerala has received 833.8 mm of rainfall during the period from October 1 to 15, as against the normal average rainfall of 407.2 mm. There is a departure of 105%. Pathanamthitta district received 194 per cent excess rainfall during this period, followed by Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode districts with 127, 116 and 111 per cent excess rainfall.

The eastern part of Kollam district received heavy rains on Sunday and the weather station at Punalur recorded 11.7 cm of rain in the last 24 hours. This resulted in swelling of the major rivers and streams in the region, affecting the areas of Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts on the west side downstream.

Several universities in the state have postponed examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday due to incessant rains, while the collectors of seven south central districts have declared Monday a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges.

The IMD said, “A cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric level remains over east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea, north Kerala coasts over Karnataka.”

Officials also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea as strong wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is very likely along the Kerala coast.
