Kerala Police not doing enough for women and children, says Annie Raja Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: National Association of Indian Women general secretary and CPI Leader Annie Raja on Wednesday blamed the police for repeated incidents of atrocities against women in Kerala. He told reporters in New Delhi that it must be suspected that a pro-RSS group was working in the police force which works against the state government’s declared policy towards women.
The CPI leader cited three recent incidents to point fingers at the police – a woman and her two children take shelter on a train to escape anti-social elements, a young woman – Sunisha – commits suicide after facing domestic violence and Pink harass the police officers. A father and a daughter on a ‘missing’ phone in Attingal. He said that it does not suit the police officers to behave like this.
Annie said that if the police had acted in time, the first two incidents could have been avoided while in the third case the behavior of the officers was highly condemnable. He demanded that the Chief Minister should take such incidents very seriously.
The CPI leader said there should be a separate department for women’s safety in the state and an independent minister should be there. He said that the existing arrangement of another department with one minister handling the Department of Women and Child Development would not be sufficient.
Annie said that he would write to the Chief Minister and LDF Coordinator to ensure independent running of the new department. The government should also provide proper legal awareness to the police to ensure that the rights of women facing atrocities within their families are protected. He said they should be able to live in the same house safely.
The LDF government in its last term had set up the Department of Women and Child Development as promised in its 2016 election manifesto. The department was separated from the Department of Social Justice. Former Health Minister KK Shailaja was in-charge of the department besides the Social Justice Department. health minister Veena George She is now in-charge of the Department of Women and Child Development.
