Kerala government, opposition try to bridge the gap between communities over Bishop’s remarks

A day after the Congress began reconciliation talks to bridge the gap between the two communities following a bishop’s remarks, Kerala minister VN Vasavan on Friday met at the residence of Bishop Joseph Kallarangat. Vasavan, who later met the media, said his visit had nothing to do with the remarks, but said some extremist forces wanted to create issues. The bishop had said that Christian girls are falling prey to love and drug jihad in Kerala and wherever weapons cannot be used, extremists are using such methods to destroy youth.

However, KPCC (Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee) president K Sudhakaran said there was no need to not believe the bishop and it was the responsibility of the state government to investigate the truth behind his remarks. “The bishop is a scholar and is well versed in religious books including the Bible, the Quran and the Bhagavad Gita. We have shared many forums and I used to listen to his speeches. Reason. It (today’s) was a personal journey,” said Vasavan. told reporters and dismissed the question whether he was the envoy of the state government.

Vasavan said that other leaders of BJP and Congress may have visited the bishop with some dubious intentions. “With regard to the controversy, the chief minister had replied. He had said that the government would not allow anyone to destroy the existing peace in the state,” he said.

Vasavan said that during his visit he did not discuss the dispute with the bishop. “The discussion on that remark is over. The Chief Minister had conveyed the stand of the government. However, there are some extremist forces who want to create issues in the state and the government does not intend to compromise with any kind of terrorism, ” he said.

Sudhakaran said during the press meet in Kochi that the Left government has failed to investigate the reasons for some of the controversies. “There is no need to distrust the bishop. It was the responsibility of the government to investigate and bring out the truth behind what the bishop had said. Everyone should jointly analyze the right and wrong in the statement. The government Failed to look into it. The reason behind some disputes in the state,” Sudhakaran said.

The Congress president said the government refuses to act even after repeatedly requesting the chief minister to take steps against incidents affecting communal harmony. “The talks on drug jihad need to end now. The Congress party cannot tolerate the destruction of secularism. It was the responsibility of the state government to reduce the issue,” Sudhakaran said.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and its former state chief CK Padmanabhan said that no particular religion can be blamed for the drug issue. Padmanabhan said, “There is no need to take the bishop’s statement seriously. Drug menace does not affect any particular religion. No particular religion can be blamed for this issue. People use terms. Be careful while doing it.” Media Kannur

Padmanabhan’s statement assumes significance as the BJP alleged that the Congress and the CPI(M) were taking positions in favor of extremist elements creating trouble in the society instead of addressing the issue raised by the senior priest. On Thursday, KPCC chief Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly VD Satheesan met senior priests from Christian and Muslim communities as part of the opposition party’s effort to bridge the gap created by the bishop’s remarks.

Both Sudhakaran and Satheesan met the Church of South India (CSI) Central Diocese Bishop Dr Malayil Sabu Koshi Cherian and the State President of Kerala Muslim Youth Federation and Thajathangadi Juma Masjid Imam Shamsuddin Mannani Elavupalam, before meeting with Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam in Changanassery Archdiocese this morning. visited. The Congress leaders’ move came after the BJP tried to gain political mileage by supporting the bishop on the matter.
