The Kerala Police on Monday registered a case against 15 people, including two Congress MLAs, for allegedly trying to forcibly release students from police lockup. Congress MLAs – Rosie M John and Sanishkumar Joseph – and others tried to free two students arrested in connection with an issue at their college in nearby Kalady.

John and Sanishkumar created a “terrorist atmosphere” by reaching Kalady police station to forcibly rescue the students on Sunday, said a police officer.

One of the arrested students was an activist of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) and the other was his friend. KSU is the student wing of the Congress in Kerala.

Police said the KSU activist and another student were arrested for obstructing the duty of the police, who had reached Kalady Sree Shankara College in connection with a case.

According to the police, 15 people, including John and Sanishkumar, were booked under nine sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 143 (unlawful assembly), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty). criminal force) and are included. 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint).

In a Facebook post, John, who is also the secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), said he intervened when the police were trying to “hunt down” KSU workers at the behest of the ruling CPI(M).

He alleged that the KSU unit president and his friend, who were not even named in the FLR, were arrested from their homes in the middle of the night, handcuffed and made to sit on the platform of a police jeep before being brought to the police station and locked up . He was locked in a cell without being given a glass of water.

Condemning the police action against the KSU workers, the MLA said that no Congress worker can sit silently and watch such acts by the police.

“That’s why we reacted strongly. If police act impartially, we will cooperate. If they (police) quote CPI(M) and hunt down KSU workers and Congressmen, then Congress workers will again Will react in kind.” Such cases will be fought politically and legally, he said.

Meanwhile, sources in the ruling CPI(M) alleged that the KSU worker and his friend were arrested in a ragging case in the college.

He said workers of various organizations affiliated to the CPI(M) would take out a protest march towards the office of MLA John against his “illegal acts”.
