Karva Chauth 2021: Women should avoid fasting in these three health conditions

Karwa Chauth 2021: The month of Kartik has started on Thursday and the first fast of Kartik falls on Sunday, 24 October. This fast is famous as ‘Karva Chauth’. Married women observe a strict fast on this day, praying for the health and long life of their husbands. Lord Shiva and his family are worshiped in the evening.

After worshiping the moon at night, the husband breaks the wife’s fast by offering water with his hands. It is believed that Karva Chauth helps in strengthening the relationship between husband and wife.

While the Karva Chauth fast is observed following pre-existing norms, women should consider their health and wellbeing before deciding to observe the fast. Many women face health issues and fasting at a time when they are suffering from these concerns is not good for their health. In such a situation, they are advised not to fast and engage in worship.

Here are some health conditions in which women are advised to abstain from fasting:

Diabetes:

Lifestyle changes have been the source of many health problems in people nowadays. Diseases that were previously found only in older people have become common in young people as well. Therefore, many women suffer from diabetes, which makes fasting extremely risky for them as they should not be hungry and thirsty for a long time. Doing so can have serious consequences for their health, such as increased blood sugar levels, increased risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Hence, it is not recommended for them to fast on Karva Chauth and they should do so only after consulting a doctor.

pregnant women:

A pregnant woman’s body requires a high amount of nutrition, so fasting for Karva Chauth can have an impact on her health as well as that of her unborn child. It is said that fasting in the first and third trimester is extremely risky. Depending on one’s health, medical professionals may allow a woman to fast during the second trimester, provided she strictly follows the instructions given by them.

blood pressure:

Some people regularly face imbalance in blood pressure. Such people are advised not to observe Karva Chauth fast. Since diet and medications play a decisive role in controlling blood pressure, fasting can raise or lower blood pressure, neither of which is good for health. Therefore, people suffering from the problem of blood pressure should not fast on Karva Chauth.
