Karnavedha, for many Hindus, is a sacrament performed on children. According to Vedic astrology, among the sixteen major samskaras or shodas sanskars a person has to undergo in his lifetime, Karnavedha is one of them. Each Shodas Sanskar holds high spiritual significance and is celebrated with various rituals including worship and prayer. Ear piercing is considered a solemn ritual and the ceremony is performed during a properly calculated auspicious time or Muhurta as per the Vedic scriptures. This Muhurta is known as Karnavedha Muhurta.

Hindus regard this sacrament as a childhood ritual and a serious religious practice. Traditionally, ear piercing was done for both boys and girls. Over the past two centuries, this ritual has largely been confined to women only. Karnavedha is made up of two words: karna, which means ear, and veda, which means to pierce.
