BENGALURU: With two cases of the new omicron variant of coronavirus detected in Karnataka, the central government on Thursday (December 2) asked people not to panic but follow COVID-appropriate behavior and get vaccinated without delay. Both patients had mild symptoms. Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry said that serious symptoms have not been noticed. Of the two cases, one was a 66-year-old South African man who had come to Bengaluru on November 20 and left India after testing negative, officials from the city’s civic agency said.
He said the other was a 46-year-old man, who is said to be a doctor – an anesthetist – at a hospital in Bengaluru. He tested positive on November 22 and has no travel history to South Africa or any other country, officials said. He said that both the persons were given two doses of Kovid vaccine. At a press conference in Delhi, Agarwal said that after the detection of two Omicron cases through the Insacog network, all his primary and secondary contacts were being traced and tested in time.
Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director General, ICMR said, “We need not panic about omicron detection, but awareness is extremely important. Follow COVID-appropriate behavior and avoid mass gatherings.” “Don’t delay getting fully vaccinated,” he insisted.
Officials of the Bengaluru civic agency said that the South African national had come to Bengaluru on November 20 and his samples were collected at the airport.
Regarding the second patient, the BBMP chief commissioner said that since the sample of the 46-year-old man had a low cycle threshold (Ct) value, it was sent for genomic sequencing and the report came back positive for Omicron on Thursday. Gupta said, “He was initially kept in home isolation and later shifted to the hospital. He is a local man without any travel history. He is stable and is recovering. There is nothing to be worried about. He is under observation.”
According to the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health, 37 flights landed in India from midnight of December 1 till 8 am on Thursday. At least 7,976 passengers arrived from ‘at-risk’ countries during this period and RT-PCR tests were conducted at airports. Agarwal said that 10 of them passengers were found to be COVID-19 positive and their samples have been sent for genomic sequencing.
