Karnataka: Yediyurappa appeals for calm after his ‘die-hard fan’ commits suicide

Bangalore: BS Yediyurappa was known as the leader of the people ever since he took over as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Yediyurappa received a lot of support from the community saints and the public since the emergence of change talks in the politics of the state. To the dismay of his fans, a tearful Yeddyurappa on Monday resigned from his CM post after a political career spanning four and a half decades.

The results meant the state was divided on the decision. It has become difficult for fans to digest this change in the political arena of Karnataka. In a tragic incident, a 35-year-old laborer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after being disheartened by Yediyurappa’s resignation from the chief minister’s post, police said.

According to Gundlupet police, the deceased has been identified as Ravi alias Rachappa, a resident of Bommalapur village in Chamarajanagar district, located 195 km from the state capital Bengaluru. The village, which has less than 1,000 households, is one of the most backward areas in the state, with a literacy rate of just 21 per cent, compared to the state average of about 75.6 per cent.

Police said that Ravi used to work as a daily wage laborer and on weekends he used to help in a small tea shop located in the village. As per the prima facie investigation, the police claimed that Ravi was a big fan of outgoing Chief Minister Yediyurappa.

“The family members claimed that he was a staunch admirer of Yediyurappa, while other residents of the village claim that though he was Yeddyurappa’s biggest fan, he had taken some loan. But it is still not very clear that he Took or not, the police said on the condition of anonymity, this extreme step under which pressure, as he was not literate and the suicide note has not been found yet, hence speculation in this case is intense.

Police said the deceased was upset soon after Yediyurappa announced his resignation. Police said, “After Yediyurappa’s announcement, he was deeply hurt and locked himself in a nearby room for the whole day and probably, he might have committed suicide by hanging himself around midnight.” As in the form of debt-trap it is known that he had also taken some hand loan.

Meanwhile, Yediyurappa, expressing grief over the incident, tweeted that every person has to go through ups and downs in his life and no one needs to lose his precious life for this.

“I humbly appeal to my fans not to take any extreme step like this. This is not right. I am deeply hurt by Ravi’s decision to end his life in this manner. I am humbled and touched by his love , but I cannot support such a display of excessive love and affection towards me. It is not right for anyone to take such a drastic step,” he said in his tweet.
