Mysuru: Domestic workers across the state, who are entitled to the Rs 2,000 Covid relief announced by the government, are struggling to submit proof of employment which is mandatory to get the assistance.
At the behest of the High Court, the government had stepped in to simplify the process, and allowed employers to certify help. However, employers are required to provide proof of their identity and most are reluctant to participate with their Aadhaar number or pan.
An estimated 10 lakh domestic workers are eligible for a one-time assistance of Rs 2,000 from the state government. Many lost their jobs during the May-July lockdown and are now only eyeing a return to normalcy.

The process was continuously delayed, forcing the domestic workers’ union to file a PIL. Chief Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, who presided over the matter, summoned the labor secretary and directed the government to simplify the process.
Accordingly, the Labor Department issued a revised government order allowing domestic workers to obtain proof of employment from any of their employers.
“First we were asked to apply for Rs 2,000 along with the name of the owner of the house, the door number of the houses we were working in. Now, we have been asked to obtain the signatures of the landlords along with their Aadhaar number/PAN. Most of the home owners are refusing to sign and share the document,” said Bhagya S Pura, a domestic help Mysore.
Sandhya PS, a member of the Mysore District Committee of the All India United Trade Union Centre, said House Help is struggling to convince employers.
State labor commissioner Akram Pasha said employers should not be wary of sharing identity details. “We use the ID numbers given by the homeowners only for verification. If the home owner refuses to share the ID details citing privacy concerns, the domestic help should always be certified by gazetted officers or panchayat development officers. for help,” he said.
