BENGALURU: The number of Covid-19 patients under treatment in Karnataka has dropped below 50,000 for the first time in nearly 90 days, as fresh cases dropped and daily discharges increased.
As of July 3, the number of active cases in Karnataka stood at 48,116. The last time the state reported less than 50,000 was on April 7 (49,254), after which a steady rise in fresh cases pushed the state to the top of the table as far as active cases go.

From being the state with the most active cases for the most part of the second wave – Maharashtra was at the top in the initial weeks – Karnataka has now slipped to third place. Maharashtra and Kerala, the only two states with over one lakh active cases so far, top the list.
Actually, the total infection in Kerala is more than Karnataka, which reached the second place in May. With 29.6 lakh cases, the southern neighboring country has at least one lakh more cases than Karnataka, while Maharashtra, with more than 60 lakh cases, is at the fore. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh occupy the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Just two days ago, India’s total active cases fell below five lakh and reached 4.7 lakh on July 3. Active cases in the country are less than five lakh for the first time since March 27, when such cases were more than 4.8 lakh.
The top five states with the most active cases are also the states with the highest number of infections. However, while these states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh – account for 53% of the total cases in the country, they account for 71% of all active cases.

Just five districts – Bengaluru Urban, Mysore, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan and Belagavi (1,765) – account for two-thirds of the active cases in the state.
Six other districts reported over a thousand active cases: Kodagu (1,596), Chikkamagaluru (1,627), Bengaluru Rural (1,039), Shivamogga (1,387), Udupi (1,035) and Mandya (1,019). These districts account for about 16% of all active cases.
Till July 3, Karnataka had reported over 27.6 lakh discharges, while the total cases stood at over 28.5 lakh. That is, by that day 97% of all patients had been cured, while another 1.2% – 35,308 people – had died.
